A recent study by NASA explains different sides of the moon

Researchers have found significant variations under the surface of the moon that might account for the striking variances between the two hemispheres.

The dark, earth-visible near side of the moon is covered in the remains of old lava flows. Its distant side is stony and rough, and we cannot view it from Earth.

Scientists have long hypothesized that the changes may be caused by the moon’s interior, but they haven’t been able to provide evidence.

Ryan Park, the team leader from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, stated, “We discovered that the moon’s near side is flexing more than the far side, indicating that there is something fundamentally different about the internal structure of the moon’s near side compared to its far side.”

“We were so shocked by the outcome of the initial data analysis that we didn’t think it was real. Therefore, we performed the computations many times to confirm the results.

“In all, this is a decade of work.”

GRAIL (gravity recovery and interior laboratory) data were examined by the team.
In 2011 and 2012, two spacecraft, Ebb and Flow, were launched to circle the moon for a year as part of that project. Using that information, they mapped the moon’s orbital response to Earth’s gravitational pull.

The moon circles because of minor variations in its gravity as it orbits the Earth.

The scientists found that the moon’s near side is internally warmer than its far side as a result of this movement, which also helped them comprehend the moon’s deep interior structure. This aids in our comprehension of the moon, but it could also help us comprehend other worlds.

The team has actually already mapped the interior structures of planets like Jupiter and the asteroid Vesta using its method. “There are many opportunities in the future to apply our technique for studying the interiors of intriguing planetary bodies throughout the solar system,” stated Park.
